Lauren Smith to provide program for NASHRM
On August 8, 2017, Lanier Ford employment attorney Lauren Smith will provide a program for the regular monthly meeting of the North Alabama Society for Human Resource Management (NASHRM). Ms. Smith will discuss the employer responsibilities under the American With Disabilities Act (ADA).Among other things, the program will—
- Define what constitutes a covered employer, qualified individual, and actual disability under the ADA.
- Explain how to identify and prevent discrimination and harassment based on disability, perceived disability, or association with a disabled person.
- Emphasize the importance of engaging in an interactive process to assess whether an employee can be reasonably accommodated.
Ms. Smith regularly consults with clients on day-to-day employment matters involving discrimination, harassment, employee policies and handbooks, discipline and termination, and exemption classifications. In responding to questions and concerns from employers, she regularly advises them about internal investigations. Ms. Smith also represents municipalities, governmental officials, and private-sector businesses in tort litigation brought under Alabama and federal law, including claims brought under the ADA, 42 U.S.C. § 1983, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA). She represents clients involved in lawsuits filed in both federal and state courts, and has significant appellate experience before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and the Alabama Supreme Court.
The meeting will be held at the Jackson Center (6001 Moquin Drive in Cummings Research Park, Huntsville) and will begin at 11 a.m.
